An Immigrant’s Story

July 30th,2015 | 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Professor/Instructor/Speaker: Winston  ChuM.D.

An Immigrant’s Story – Is an immigrant’s story important, especially this one? The answer is a resounding yes! Every immigrant’s story is unique – especially for this nation begun mostly by immigrants and almost everyone is a descendant of one and how many of them enriched the American experience. Many commonly immigrants come for economic reasons; mine reason was because of officially sanctioned ethnic strife and discrimination that denied me an education. This presentation will be a celebration of America as a refuge, the shining beacon and its educated citizens many of whom were cognizant of their own humanity, international responsibilities and self-imposed sense of duty. Winston Chu, MD, is a plastic surgeon and author of “REBORN: Journeys from the Abyss” was born in colonial Burma and grew up in immediate post-independence period when parliamentary democracy reigned. His idyllic early years were interrupted by political turmoil following the seizure of power by a socialist-military dictatorship. His immigration to the United States on his father’s advice and contacts made during World War II in the Burma-China-India theatre. His struggles and survival in Socialist Burma and in the USA as an immigrant during the 1970s as well as triumph over several life-threatening conditions formed the abyss of his life.
