Fairview Satellite: The Proposed Lake Erie National Marine Sanctuary: What Is It, Why Is It Important, What's Next
Over the last nine years you have likely heard whisperings about an effort to protect and preserve shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Erie through the establishment of a national marine sanctuary. If you have ever wondered what exactly this effort is about, join Honey Stempka as she provides an overview of the National Marine Sanctuary System and associated community benefits, a brief summary of the Lake Erie nomination, where the proposed Lake Erie National Marine Sanctuary currently is in the process and what is to come.

While Honey feels her best when she is surrounded by trees, in 2015 she took on a project largely connected to water, which has continued to show up in her life throughout the last nine years. That project was coordinating the application for the Lake Erie National Marine Sanctuary. Honey has her master’s degree in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato (yes, that Mankato…). Since 2018 she has led an environmental nonprofit, the Erie County Department of Planning and Community Development and the creation of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development’s emerging Office of Community Planning. Now she works with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) co-managing the designation process for the proposed Lake Erie National Marine Sanctuary.
