In 1972, the first issue of the Journal of Erie Studies was published, and the first article printed in that journal was "Ethnic Politics in Erie" by Dr. William P. Garvey. On the eve of publishing Volume 42, No. 1, Dr. Garvey sadly passed away. The articles of this issue were selected in honor of Dr. Garvey's vision for the journal: creating a scholarly publication that would act as a portal for Erie history that reflected the changing perspectives of those at its helm.
