THE JES ANNOUNCED ITS GLOBAL SUMMIT XVI SPEAKER LINE UP IN A MEDIA CONFERENCE ON Thursday, june 13 AT 10:30 A.M. AT THE JEFFERSON EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY, 3207 STATE STREET.

Erie, Pennsylvania (June 13, 2024) – The Jefferson Educational Society announced its Global Summit 2024 speaker lineup in a media conference Thursday, June 13 at 10:30 a.m. at its campus, located at 3207 State St.

 

Former U.S. representative for Wyoming's at-large congressional district, Liz Cheney, who also chaired the House Republican Conference, the third-highest position in the House Republication leadership, will kick off the JES’s Global Summit XVI speaker series in conversation with Benedictine Sisters theologian, author, and speaker Sister Joan Chittister on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.

 

Following Cheney, the lineup continues with legendary sportscaster, veteran journalist, actor, author, and podcaster Stephen A. Smith (Oct. 20), who’ll discuss the future of sports and his bestselling memoir “Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes.”

 

“We are thrilled to continue developing the Global Summit into one of the best conferences in the country,” said JES President Dr. Ferki Ferati, who spoke at the conference. “We are able to do that because of the tremendous support of the Erie community and our many sponsors, and the desire of these bright minds to want to be in Erie with our engaged, thoughtful, and curious audiences.”

 

This year’s Summit will also feature renowned historian Heather Cox Richardson (Oct. 29), the author of the bestselling book, “Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America,” and her nightly newsletter, “Letters from an American,” which reaches over a million readers. Richardson will be in conversation with Tom Nichols, a staff writer at The Atlantic and an author of The Atlantic Daily newsletter. Nichols, the author of “The Death of Expertise,” presented on his other book, “Our Own Worst Enemy: The Assault from Within on Modern Democracy” at the JES’s Global Summit last year.

 

The JES is again partnering with Gannon University to not just host events on the college’s campus but to include the university’s Gannon Reads event as a part of the Global Summit. This year will feature Lara Schwartz (Oct. 30), professor in the School of Public Affairs at American University, and author of “Try to Love the Questions.”

 

The Global Summit continues with Michael Strain (Nov. 4), the director of Economic Policy Studies and the Arthur F. Burns Scholar in Politic Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), who will discuss his book, “The American Dream Is Not Dead (But Populism Might Kill It)”; Joe Davis (Nov. 6), the managing director and senior partner at Boston Consulting Group, and author of “The Generous Leader: 7 Ways to Give of Yourself for Everyone’s Gain”; and Marian L. Tupy (Nov. 7), the founder and editor of HumanProgress.org, senior fellow at the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, and author of “Superabundance: The Story of Population Growth, Innovation, and Human Flourishing on an Infinitely Bountiful Planet.”

 

Nichols won’t be the only 2023 Global Summit presenter to return in 2024. On Monday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, Maj. Gen. Ed Bolton, Jr. (Ret.), the chief of staff of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and 2023 recipient of the Thomas B. Hagen Dignitas Award, returns to lead a panel discussion on “Leading a Diverse Workforce Today and Tomorrow” with high-ranking officials from the FAA and Aerospace Corp., and more.   

 

The following night, Tuesday, Nov. 12, Harold Holzer, the Jonathan F. Fanton Director of The Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College in New York, and author, co-author, or editor of 56 books on President Lincoln and the Civil War, will present “Lincoln and the Un-Civil War on Immigration,” drawing from his most recently published book, “Brought Forth on this Continent: Abraham Lincoln and American Immigration.”

 

Friday, Nov. 15, the JES will host one of the nation’s most prominent scholars, Eddie Glaude, Jr. An author, political commentator, public intellectual, and passionate educator, Glaude examines the complex dynamics of the American experience. He will discuss his most recent book, “We Are The Leaders We Have Been Looking For.”

 

Returning to again chair the JES’s Global Summit, Erie-native and host of “The Briefing” on SiriusXM Steve Scully, who has interviewed every U.S. President since Ford, will lead a “Post-Election Media Panel” featuring D.C. insiders weighing in on the 2024 Presidential Election.

 

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1943, Frederick “Fred” Biletnikoff, nicknamed “Scarecrow,” is the recipient of this year’s Thomas B. Hagen Dignitas Award. Biletnikoff, a member of both the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1988) and College Football Hall of Fame (1991), will the path from Erie to the Hall of Fame – reviewing his life and legacy.

 

The Global Summit is hosted each year by the Jefferson in cooperation with a number of major sponsors, including Erie Insurance, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), among many others.
