What is White Supremacy & Christian White Nationalism? - Perspective from a Unitarian Universalist Minister

Monday, May 1

6 - 7:30 p.m.

Lincoln Community Center Library

Featuring Rev. Charles Brock, M.Litt.

The term white supremacy is used in some academic studies of racial power to denote a system of structural or societal racism that privileges white people over others, regardless of the presence or the absence of racial hatred (Wikipedia). Using this definition, we will look at current issues affecting America and Erie County. It is a very "hot" topic, but has been with us since 1492 and seems to be getting worse at present. Many politicians are using "anti-woke" sentiments to stoke voters. The question of teaching race matters in schools is also on the agenda in many places ("Critical Race Theory").

Why Africa and Geography Matter

Tuesday, May 2

7-8:30 p.m.

Jefferson Educational Society

Featuring Ed Grode, M.Ed.

Two and a half million years ago, humans and animals first converged on the African continent, where mankind formed its first thoughts, sang the first songs, and danced for the first time. Today, Africa is the world's second-largest continent with the second-largest population. It is a continent with the most countries, most languages, longest river, and largest desert on our planet. It is the most physically diverse continent and rivals Australia for the most diverse wildlife, and is rich in diamonds and other precious metals, gold, and oil. Why is it that we generally don't know enough about this continent of superlatives, this cradle of humankind, and why does it matter? Follow longtime expert of the African continent Ed Grode in a lecture that turns a  spotlight on a continent underrepresented in geography education.

A WWII Veteran, His Experiences, and His Wishes for His Final Flight

Thursday, May 4

4 - 5:30 p.m.

Jefferson Educational Society

Featuring Yvonne Caputo, M.Ed.

Michael Caputo would never have had to go to war.  His presidential deferment for repairing airplanes that were damaged by young learning pilots would have kept him stateside. However, being called to the office of General Hap Arnold, commanding general of the Army Air Forces, changed everything.  Mike petitioned to be released from his deferment and to enter the USAAF as a cadet. He went on to receive his navigator's wings and flew bombing missions over German and France. He returned to the states at the end of the war with undiagnosed PTSD, but he became instrumental in the development of emergency services in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Having witnessed the death of many, he never wanted to live without quality of life. As he approached his life's end, he made his wishes known and legally binding. His final flight was as he wanted it to be. Join his daughter and book-writing author, Yvonne Caputo, as she tells her dad's life and their relationship in two moving and encouraging books about life and aging with dignity.
