Dr. James Ray is president of Alchemy Consulting, P.C., a company specializing in the provision of expert advice on pain and palliative care pharmacotherapy.  Dr. Ray graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy and went on to complete a general hospital pharmacy residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

During his 23 year tenure as a clinical pharmacy specialist, Dr. Ray was responsible for the establishment of patient controlled analgesia services and  a pharmacy-based pain consult service at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, which has served as a model for other programs established within the country.  Dr. Ray additionally assisted in establishing, along with a partner physician, the Palliative Care Consult Service at Hamot, for which he served as Coordinator of Services.   Dr. Ray also spent 6 years working as a Medical Science Liaison within the pharmaceutical industry before establishing his company.

Dr. Ray was co-chair for the development of the Palliative Care Taskforce within the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, is a former chair of the Pain Management & Palliative Care PRN within the American College of Clinical Pharmacists, and has been a key contributor toward the development of a Board Certification in Pain and Palliative Care for pharmacist through the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.  He currently serves on the Education Advisory Committee for the American Pain Society.  He also serves on the 2013 AAHPM& HPNA Annual Assembly Planning Committee and recently served as a reviewer for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s UNIPAC self-study series.
