Emily Chivers Yochim

Emily Chivers Yochim, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Communication Arts and Theatre Department at Allegheny College, where she teaches a variety of courses about media and culture. She also teaches courses in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Dr. Yochim Chivers’ most recent book, Mothering Through Precarity: Women’s Work and Digital Media, co-authored with Dr. Julie Wilson, examines how mothers in the Rust Belt negotiate the demands of mothering through everyday engagement with digital media. She is also the author of the award-winning ethnography, Skate Life: Re-imagining White Masculinity, which explores how skateboarders navigate their identities through engagement with media, and she has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including Cultural Studies and Communication and Critical/ Cultural Studies, and edited collections. An Allegheny alumna, she earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies and Graduate Certification in Screen Arts and Cultures from the University of Michigan in 2007. She is the mother of three young children.
