Human rights expert Tom Webb will appear in a special program Monday, June 17, at the Jefferson Educational Society to discuss the migrant crisis on America’s southern border.
Webb, a member of the Oakland, Calif. Catholic Worker community, has an extensive background in social justice work and recently joined a delegation of 75 interfaith leaders from the San Francisco area in Honduras to gain a better understanding of the issues causing a recent crush of asylum seekers from Central America.
Monday’s program at the Jefferson, 3207 State St., will begin at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is requested.
Webb, who holds a Master’s degree in Theology as well as Pastoral Studies from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, has visited Honduras three times since 2015. Most recently in late March, Webb and his group traveled to San Pedro Sula and Bajo Aguan in Norther Honduras, documenting the effects of land confiscations by international investors, pollution from mining interests, and localized violence. From there they visited the nation’s capital, Tegucigalpa, and met with the United Nations Human Rights Council and with Heidi Fulton of the U.S. Embassy to report their findings in the north.
The delegation was organized by Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity, SHARE-El Salvador Foundation, and the Sisters of Mercy.
