Programming at the Jefferson Educational Society

The Jefferson Educational Society offers different programs during the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. Some of the past and current programs include the Global Summit, Metro 100, Brock Institute Lectures, Community Conversations, Jefferson Satellite programs, and other special programs.

Programming has been a cornerstone of the Jefferson Educational Society since its beginning. From the launch of the annual Global Summit, which itself grew from a two-and-half day series to one spread over six weeks, to the total of annual events to over 100, to the launch of the Satellite Programming initiative throughout Erie County, to the more than 200 digital programs livestreamed and broadcasted to the public during the pandemic and ongoing, JES programming continues to expand in an effort to make our events more accessible to the community in new ways.

The First of the Jefferson Essays Now Available Online

Posted on May 20th, 2015 at 3:10 PM

Dear Reader:

By clicking here, you can access a copy of the Jefferson Educational Society’s first essay entitled “Is Erie a Safe City?”

In this 32-page essay, you will find not only relevant public safety data but also evaluation of that data and some important ideas for significantly improving Erie’s public safety.  As you will find, the essay contains some very encouraging and, perhaps very surprising, news about the general condition of Erie’s violent crime pattern including how the community ranks compared to other regional similar sized communities.  You will also read about Erie’s not-so-good statistics regarding the community’s safety compared to national averages and some recommendations that could potentially reverse or improve this disturbing trend.

This essay is but the first of three or four which the Jefferson Society plans to publish annually on community concerns and interesting new ideas that will promote the progress of Erie County.  Each essay will be 25 to 35 pages in length, written by mostly local authors under the review of a four member editorial board.  The publication of each essay will be followed by a public presentation at the Jefferson Society.

The Jefferson Essays are intended to spur both in-depth public knowledge and understanding the important public issues of concern to the greater Erie community.

The publication of the Jefferson Society essays is made possible by grant support, contributions from civic-minded patrons and, the Society itself, all who believe that knowledge is power which can be used to re-invent the community that we call “home.”

We welcome your comments, criticism, suggestions or support on either the essay you have received or the very idea of publishing such essays as we begin work on our second essay due in late spring.

Very truly yours,
